Isaiah 43

The Redeemer of Israel
1 But now, thus says the LORD, who created you, O Jacob,
And He who formed you, O Israel:

“ Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by your name;
You are Mine.
 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you.
When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned,
Nor shall the flame scorch you.
 3 For I am the LORD your God,
The Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I gave Egypt for your ransom,
Ethiopia and Seba in your place.
 4 Since you were precious in My sight,
You have been honored,
And I have loved you;
Therefore I will give men for you,
And people for your life.
 5 Fear not, for I am with you;
I will bring your descendants from the east,
And gather you from the west;
 6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
And to the south, ‘Do not keep them back!’
Bring My sons from afar,
And My daughters from the ends of the earth—
 7 Everyone who is called by My name,
Whom I have created for My glory;
I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”
 8 Bring out the blind people who have eyes,
And the deaf who have ears.
 9 Let all the nations be gathered together,
And let the people be assembled.
Who among them can declare this,
And show us former things?
Let them bring out their witnesses, that they may be justified;
Or let them hear and say, “It is truth.”
 10 “ You are My witnesses,” says the LORD,

“ And My servant whom I have chosen,
That you may know and believe Me,
And understand that I am He.
Before Me there was no God formed,
Nor shall there be after Me.
 11 I, even I, am the LORD,
And besides Me there is no savior.
 12 I have declared and saved,
I have proclaimed,
And there was no foreign god among you;
Therefore you are My witnesses,”
Says the LORD, “that I am God.
 13 Indeed before the day was, I am He;
And there is no one who can deliver out of My hand;
I work, and who will reverse it?”
 14 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer,
The Holy One of Israel:

“ For your sake I will send to Babylon,
And bring them all down as fugitives—
The Chaldeans, who rejoice in their ships.
 15 I am the LORD, your Holy One,
The Creator of Israel, your King.”
 16 Thus says the LORD, who makes a way in the sea
And a path through the mighty waters,
 17 Who brings forth the chariot and horse,
The army and the power
(They shall lie down together, they shall not rise;
They are extinguished, they are quenched like a wick):
 18 “ Do not remember the former things,
Nor consider the things of old.
 19 Behold, I will do a new thing,
Now it shall spring forth;
Shall you not know it?
I will even make a road in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert.
 20 The beast of the field will honor Me,
The jackals and the ostriches,
Because I give waters in the wilderness
And rivers in the desert,
To give drink to My people, My chosen.
 21 This people I have formed for Myself;
They shall declare My praise.
Pleading with Unfaithful Israel
22 “ But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob;
And you have been weary of Me, O Israel.
 23 You have not brought Me the sheep for your burnt offerings,
Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices.
I have not caused you to serve with grain offerings,
Nor wearied you with incense.
 24 You have bought Me no sweet cane with money,
Nor have you satisfied Me with the fat of your sacrifices;
But you have burdened Me with your sins,
You have wearied Me with your iniquities.
 25 “ I, even I, am He who blots out your transgressions for My own sake;
And I will not remember your sins.
 26 Put Me in remembrance;
Let us contend together;
State your case, that you may be acquitted.
 27 Your first father sinned,
And your mediators have transgressed against Me.
 28 Therefore I will profane the princes of the sanctuary;
I will give Jacob to the curse,
And Israel to reproaches.

John 3
The New Birth
1 There was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to Jesus by night
and said to Him, “Rabbi, we know that You are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that
You do unless God is with him.”
3 Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the
kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’
s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the
kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7 Do not
marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound
of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.”
9 Nicodemus answered and said to Him, “How can these things be?”
10 Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and do not know these things? 11 Most
assuredly, I say to you, We speak what We know and testify what We have seen, and you do not receive Our
witness. 12 If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly
things? 13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is
in heaven.  14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He
gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For
God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he
has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that the light
has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For
everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. 21
But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in
God.”
John the Baptist Exalts Christ

22 After these things Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He remained with them
and baptized. 23 Now John also was baptizing in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there. And
they came and were baptized. 24 For John had not yet been thrown into prison.
25 Then there arose a dispute between some of John’s disciples and the Jews about purification. 26 And they
came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified—
behold, He is baptizing, and all are coming to Him!”
27 John answered and said, “A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You
yourselves bear me witness, that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ but, ‘I have been sent before Him.’ 29 He who has
the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly
because of the bridegroom’s voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled. 30 He must increase, but I must
decrease. 31 He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth is earthly and speaks of the earth.
He who comes from heaven is above all. 32 And what He has seen and heard, that He testifies; and no one
receives His testimony. 33 He who has received His testimony has certified that God is true. 34 For He whom
God has sent speaks the words of God, for God does not give the Spirit by measure. 35 The Father loves the
Son, and has given all things into His hand. 36 He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who
does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

I Thessalonians 5

The Day of the Lord
1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you. 2 For you
yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. 3 For when they say,
“Peace and safety!” then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And
they shall not escape. 4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.
5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness. 6 Therefore let us not
sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get
drunk are drunk at night. 8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love,
and as a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through
our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.
11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.
Various Exhortations

12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and
admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.
14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be
patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for
yourselves and for all.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ
Jesus for you.
19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies. 21 Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22
Abstain from every form of evil.
Blessing and Admonition

23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be
preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.
25 Brethren, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.
28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

Psalm 37
A Psalm of David.
1 Do not fret because of evildoers,
      Nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
2 For they shall soon be cut down like the grass,
      And wither as the green herb.

3 Trust in the LORD, and do good;
      Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
4 Delight yourself also in the LORD,
      And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

5 Commit your way to the LORD,
      Trust also in Him,
      And He shall bring it to pass.
6 He shall bring forth your righteousness as the light,
      And your justice as the noonday.

7 Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for Him;
      Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way,
      Because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath;
      Do not fret—it only causes harm.

9 For evildoers shall be cut off;
      But those who wait on the LORD,
      They shall inherit the earth.
10 For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more;
      Indeed, you will look carefully for his place,
      But it shall be no more.
11 But the meek shall inherit the earth,
      And shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

12 The wicked plots against the just,
      And gnashes at him with his teeth.
13 The Lord laughs at him,
      For He sees that his day is coming.
14 The wicked have drawn the sword
      And have bent their bow,
      To cast down the poor and needy,
      To slay those who are of upright conduct.
15 Their sword shall enter their own heart,
      And their bows shall be broken.

16 A little that a righteous man has
      Is better than the riches of many wicked.
17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken,
      But the LORD upholds the righteous.

18 The LORD knows the days of the upright,
      And their inheritance shall be forever.
19 They shall not be ashamed in the evil time,
      And in the days of famine they shall be satisfied.
20 But the wicked shall perish;
      And the enemies of the LORD,
      Like the splendor of the meadows, shall vanish.
      Into smoke they shall vanish away.

21 The wicked borrows and does not repay,
      But the righteous shows mercy and gives.
22 For those blessed by Him shall inherit the earth,
      But those cursed by Him shall be cut off.

23 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD,
      And He delights in his way.
24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
      For the LORD upholds him with His hand.

25 I have been young, and now am old;
      Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken,
      Nor his descendants begging bread.
26 He is ever merciful, and lends;
      And his descendants are blessed.

27 Depart from evil, and do good;
      And dwell forevermore.
28 For the LORD loves justice,
      And does not forsake His saints;
      They are preserved forever,
      But the descendants of the wicked shall be cut off.
29 The righteous shall inherit the land,
      And dwell in it forever.

30 The mouth of the righteous speaks wisdom,
      And his tongue talks of justice.
31 The law of his God is in his heart;
      None of his steps shall slide.

32 The wicked watches the righteous,
      And seeks to slay him.
33 The LORD will not leave him in his hand,
      Nor condemn him when he is judged.

34 Wait on the LORD,
      And keep His way,
      And He shall exalt you to inherit the land;
      When the wicked are cut off, you shall see it.
35 I have seen the wicked in great power,
      And spreading himself like a native green tree.
36 Yet he passed away, and behold, he was no more;
      Indeed I sought him, but he could not be found.

37 Mark the blameless man, and observe the upright;
      For the future of that man is peace.
38 But the transgressors shall be destroyed together;
      The future of the wicked shall be cut off.

39 But the salvation of the righteous is from the LORD;
      He is their strength in the time of trouble.
40 And the LORD shall help them and deliver them;
      He shall deliver them from the wicked,
      And save them,
      Because they trust in Him.
